In the heart of Venice, a verdant path leads to the Palazzo Franchetti courtyard.
Amidst the historic buildings and inumbrating trees, stands the NAWA Shrine.
The spiraling sculpture, entitled “The Traveling Isolation of MAIMAI”, is a hollow coiling space that beckons the deities of the natural surround to enter within.
NAWA Shrine 2015 is dedicated to a sustainable global future.

NA means You and WA means I.
NAWA is also a rope to demarcate sacred space,
NAWA thus signifies our creative interaction,
to achieve interconnectedness, unity and peace.
Entering into the NAWA Shrine, where Emptiness is complete,
each individual is awakened to the symbiotic exquisiteness of all Life.
The Forest, layered with newspapers in languages from around the world,
represents Oneness born from Diversity.
Re-cycled to create a hollow coiling space “The Traveling Isolation of MAIMAI”, invites
a sensorial symbolic journey from the Earth's inner core to the spiraling galaxies beyond.

2014.5.31 Nawa Axis for Peace Project 2014

Through this process of hard physical labor, and much perspiration, together we touched the roots of life in the cosmos, and created a new network of life and love.
Through this network, we can convey, heart to heart, all over the world, a strong lifeline of spirit between NA-WA - You and I. We call this the ‘NAWA Network Toward Peace”.

and connecting with each other. No skills required – just bring your Heart and your Hands!"

The Event:
A single strand is weak, but with two or more, the rope becomes stronger.
In Japan, the twisted rope is called NAWA. Also NA means “YOU” and WA means “ME”.
Therefore, NAWA signifies the binding together of diverse people in a spirit of peace
and harmony. During the event, more than 100 hands will work together, twisting the
monumental NAWA rope column, and raising it at its site in the beautiful garden of the
LongHouse Reserve.

NAWA Axis For Peace -Project 2014 In New York
Dr. Mariyo Yagi - Artist

Dr. Mariyo Yagi, Artist believes the starting point of human culture was a twisting grasses into a rope. The rope was essential for the advancement of civilization—for moving huge stones and big logs. Perhaps humans even made rope before they made fire, learning that rubbing the hands together generates heat and pray for something better. Rubbing their hands together produced twisting and twining spirally. Spinning thread, cord and rope brought about weaving, knitting, knotting, connecting and relating. One strand is weak, but with two or more, the rope becomes stronger.
In Japan, when rope is ritually used, it is called Nawa. The Nawa is the spiral structure itself, which has been documented in the micro and macro of nature from DNA to Cosmos. The planets revolve together in a galactic spiral, as do the atoms in our DNA. The same is true in our social life. Societies gain strength from the intertwining of people with diverse backgrounds, gifts and cultures, each contributing to the vitality of the greater whole. Its spiral form symbolizes interconnectedness. In ancient Japanese, na means “you” and wa means “I.” She calls “Nawa” thus signifies our own creative interaction, our oneness from diversity. Nawa is a bonding of spirits between people and people, between nature and people with spiral energy. "Nawa axis" symbolizes unity for peace.
